Grass Care Resources
I am having a real problem with a variety of weeds in my lawn. Is there anything that I can do about them?
Richard Kerchival, Alvin, Texas
Weed control has to be maintained during each season and the key is a healthy lawn; properly watered and fertilized.
The two main groups of weeds are grassy weeds and broadleaf weeds. Grassy weeds, which include crab grass and dallies grass, are most common in the spring and summer. Pre-emergent treatment can prevent some, but not all grassy weeds. Broadleaf weeds, which include thistle and dandelion, are most common in the fall, winter, and spring.
Be sure you are growing a thick, healthy lawn thus preventing weeds by starving them of both nutrients and sunlight. In addition, lawn treatment companies will often apply a pre-emergent treatment to the lawn to stop weeds before they grow, and post-emergent treatment to control weeds already growing. During the summer months, to limit overall stress, post-emergents should be used sparingly.
Knowledge is the key to successful weed control; therefore you should do your homework prior to treating your lawn. Your local lawn care professional technicians custom design their treatments to address each lawn’s specific problem.
